I have been lucky to have the opportunity to fish with guides in British Columbia, Alberta, and all over the Texas Gulf Coast. My 6 hour fishing trip with Captain Russ has been my best experience by far. He is the perfect balance of coach and fishing buddy. We spent the first hour working on technique (at my request) and he helped me work through some of the issues I have with my cast. After that we spent 5 hours cruising to different spots that were densely populated (visibly) with trout, reds, ladies, and snook. The entire time he was keeping the boat well positioned while calling out game direction/distance and giving me feedback on technique. Every fish I missed was my own fault! Awesome experience, I highly recommend hiring this gentleman!

I was born and lived in Pinellas County my whole life. I love fishing for tarpon, especially with a fly rod. I have gone out with Capt Russ 3 or 4 times over the years, he has never let me down. I was fishing with him about 2 weeks ago, and just really took in the small details he puts into a charter to make it successful. We were fishing the beach for tarpon, and there were maybe 6 other boats doing the same thing. Well they were trying, but not as good. I saw at least 5 other guides doing a 'typical' tarpon trip. They anchor up, the guide stands on the poiing platform, they stick the fisherman on the bow, and they wait, hoping for a fish to come within casting distance. Not Russ. His boat NEVER stopped moving. Fish would swim a particular depth for a while, move in shallower, then deeper, from North to South, and back up. And we were there to throw at them. I probably had over 30 shots that day, and more that I could not get to as I was a little rusty with the big rod, which was my fault. Got my fish to the boat and a few other bites, i don't think I have ever got skunked with the Capt. No other boats hooked up that I saw. Last time I fished with him a few years back I hooked 13. Yeah, 13 bites in a day on the fly. Boat positioning. He gets it, like it's second nature. He understands what hand you are casting with, which way the fish are moving, where the wind is coming from, etc. to make casting easier. I think I only stuck the fly in my ear once, which is good for me. Knots, don't get me started. To say he is the perfectionist is an understatement. I won't go into detail or my fingers would fall off from typing. For those in the know, proper knots make or break you. Well mine didn't break. He should start a knot university. Professor Russ. His boat is flawless. Everything has a purpose and a specific place. It's very stable, much more so than these smaller skiffs I see out there. Very comfortable to be on all day. He's a great coach, instructor, and critic. Taught me his '12, 20, 30, shoot' method. If you fish with him, be sure to ask him to demonstrate. It's worth the price of admission. Over the years I've read plenty of books on casting, watched too many videos on You Tube, spent many hours practice casting on the grass. Learned more from him in 5 minutes. Watch him cast. It's that good that it gets you mad. Great way to spend a day on the water. Not sure why I don't do it more frequently. Hope to change that and will, without a doubt, be on his boat again. Thanks Capt for a great day, all the way around I am grateful. Wayne.

I would recommend Capt. Russ to anyone. he is very knowledgeable and patient angler. this was my first trip saltwater fly fishing and will absolutely do this again with Capt. Russ. Great boat, great conversation, great music and most important great fishing!!

What a great fishing experience with Capt Shirley. He is very knowledgeable. He got me a Tampa bay triple play, red fish, snook, & sea trout... it was like I was fishing with my good fishing buddy... I will be back...nelsen
