Had the misfortune of exploring lease options with David Kaufman in the University Building. They did their credit and background check and approved my application and presented me with a lease that I found unsuitable for me. I asked for my uncashed deposit check and application containing all of my most sensitive personal information back. David Kaufman refused to return my application to me. Said that it was his property. In this age of identity theft, what reputable company would want to keep someone’s personal information and then act so smugly when asked to return it? ***UPDATE*** The Co. responded and defended their practice of retaining my personal info because they paid for the credit check. Abhorrent! I ASKED FOR THE PAPERWORK THAT CONTAINED ALL OF MY PERSONAL, SENSITIVE INFORMATION TO BE RETURNED TO ME. So far I have not been provided with a reasonable answer as to why David Kaufman refused to return paperwork that could be used to steal my identity. The company states that they shredded my documents. But, when I offered to retrieve my documents in person, they refused to grant my request. I have no proof that my documents were shredded. My documents could still be in their files. My documents could have been carelessly discarded in the trash or recycling. I’m not sure that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau would agree with their decision to keep my personal information. Just because you’re paying for a credit report doesn’t mean that you can bypass CFPB regulations. I believe that Mr Kaufman was being spiteful by not returning paperwork with my personal information. I decided NOT to lease from his Co. because the lease terms were very favorable to the bldg owner and very unfavorable to tenants. I had an attorney review the draft lease agreement who advised me.
