Packing Essentials for a Winter Move Don't Forget These Items
Winter Moving Essentials
Moving during the winter can be difficult as compared to the other seasons. But if you plan and prepare well, you will have a smooth relocation experience. Most people hire moving companies, and they handle the move, but you still need to prepare. Each move is different which requires detailed planning and packing the right essentials. When you move in winter, your packing will be different and you need special items in your bag of essentials.
In this article, we have listed all the items that you might need during the winter move.
Clothes & Accessories
In one of our previous articles - Dress Code for Moving Day we mentioned that on a snowy or winter moving day, you need special dresses and shoes. But other than shoes, you need some necessary accessories that will ease your movement.
- Warm outerwear: During winter move, there are chances of you moving on a snowy day or there will be moisture or rain. So, buy warm jackets, coats, and outerwear that are waterproof and insulated. If you feel cold cover yourself in layers of warm clothes to be warm.
- Thermal Innerwear: To keep yourself warm throughout the move, better to wear thermal innerwear that will keep you warm from the inside out. These thermal wears are made of synthetic materials and merino wool.
- Boots/Shoes: The next thing on your clothing and accessories list is wearing the right shoes on a winter moving day. Snow and moisture will increase the risk of slipping and injuries. So, it is better to wear winter boots with good traction. These will keep your feet warm, moisture free and you can walk easily.
- Hats and Gloves: Wearing hats or winter caps will reduce the risk of getting ill as freezing temperatures can cause headaches. The next thing is gloves, these are essential for all moving days to reduce the risk of injury to your hands. Freezing temperature can affect your hand movement and grip, so wear comfortable gloves and get a good grip.
- Socks: Don’t forget to wear socks with winter shoes to keep your feet warm.
- Skincare: Keeping your skin healthy is equally important, so wear lip balm, moisturizer, and sunscreen to protect your skin from harsh winter winds.
Essentials for New Home
Before moving day, it is better to get your new house ready for the transition. Here are some essentials you need in your new house:
- Space Heaters: As you are moving in winter, make sure that the new house heaters are in good condition. If they are not doing well, then you can get them ready or carry some portable space heaters to keep the place warm.
- Cleaning supplies: Arrange cleaning supplies at your new house, as you cannot take them with you on the moving truck. But a clean and refreshing home will help you an easy transition and feel relaxed.
- Insulation: Check your new house, and if there are any gaps or cracks in the windows or any other place. Make sure that there are no gaps and if there is any gap or crack, then seal it up with the required sealing agent.
- Snow removal tools: When you reach the new house, the entry passage might be blocked by the snow. So, it is important to carry some snow removal tools like ice scrapers, shovels, and de-icing salt. You might also need these supplies while you are on the road.
- Cooking supplies: In winter, it is difficult to find food deliveries in a new place. Instead of starving, better if you can cook something fresh and warm. Carry some cooking essentials with you like cooking utensils, appliances (induction stove, sandwich maker, electric kettle), and some raw food and beverage supplies.
- Emergency supplies: A new home is an empty place and you never know what you need. There are chances of a power outage or bad weather so you must carry the following essentials including batteries, non-perishable food, instant beverage packs, first-aid kits, flashlights, and more. Also, carry water in bulk for the travel and the new house.
Bag of Essentials
For each move, it is important to pack a bag of essentials or a survival kit. This bag will have everything you need during your travels or in the new house for the first few days. Here is the list of items you should pack in your bag of essentials:
- Snacks: Pack plenty of snacks like energy bars, sandwiches, and more energy-boosting foods that will keep you fueled throughout the day. If you are moving with children, pack their favorite snacks and feed them time-to-time.
- Beverages: In winter, you need to keep your body warm and a hot beverage will be the best thing you can have. So, make some tea or coffee or hot cocoa and take a sip to keep you warm.
- First-aid kit: It is an essential item you must pack, it should have your daily medications, some bandages, pain-relief ointments, and medicines to cure cuts and scratches.
- Clothes & Linen: Pack some extra woolen clothes as there are chances the clothes you are wearing will get wet. Also, pack some comforters and bedsheets so you can easily relax in your new house and stay warm.
- Potable chargers: Make sure your phones are charged on the moving day and also carry compatible portable chargers in case of emergency.
